Namaste

So I've been toying with the idea of teaching yoga for some time now, but have been too scared to really try it other than a brief session at a yoga retreat and a mini session at my family reunion. I think that the more something means to you the harder it can be to teach. I want so badly to convey my passion but feel that I lack the knowledge, experience, and methodology to do that effectively.

Our faculty yoga teacher had to miss teaching class today and asked last Friday if I'd be interested in stepping in to teach. Of course I said no... but couldn't stop thinking about it or feeling guilty for the next few days.

I should want to try it right? What a perfect opportunity to try it out for a group of supportive, non-judgemental friends. Just the thought of it made my heart beat a million miles an hour.

It took several other people asking me to do it before I finally gave in, buckled down and wrote a little script and stayed up way too late researching the proper words to describe the poses I wanted to do.

Tonight I taught a nice small class tonight and it went really well! The other teachers were so encouraging and were willing to at least attempt all of the awkward positions! I was nervous and probably rambled, but it definitely wasn't as bad as I thought.

I felt pretty good by the end of the class when one teacher said " I think thats the first time I've stood on my head since I was a little kid!" If even one of my "students" came away with a renewed strength, energy, relaxation, or sense of accomplishment, then I feel that it was worth it.

Now, if only I could be so hopefully about my middle school chorus.... yikes!
